knit sheep sweater

Ordinarily, stitches are knitted in the same order in every row, and the wales of the fabric run parallel and vertically along the fabric. Welcome to the wonderful world of knitting! Even if you've been here for a while, there is always something new about this most fascinating craft!

It is not done like knitting on needles, it is done on your fingers. Dyeing may be done industrially, by hand or even hand-painted onto the yarn. During knitting, the active stitches are secured mechanically, either from individual hooks (in knitting machines) or from a knitting needle or frame in hand-knitting.

Some people prefer circular needles because they are more comfortable to use and you can knit both in the round or back and forth like straight needles. The most important property of needles is their diameter, which ranges from below 2 mm to 25 mm (roughly 1 inch). Even a beginning knitter can make wonderful gifts that will show your love and creativity!

You also will usually want to stick with chunky yarns (this is a good use for "novelty" yarns, which have lots of texture and are usually thick but also light and fluffy), since they knit up quickly so you can make more presents. Once you learn the basics of knitting, you will want to continue progressing to more advanced stitches and knitting patterns.
